I am truly honored to welcome you to KCPMUN X as your president for the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee-SOCHUM. My name is Maria Fernanda Peralta, and I am excited to lead our discussions on a topic of critical global importance: “Decriminalization of Drugs and Its Impact on Global Human Rights.”

SOCHUM plays a pivotal role within the United Nations by tackling fundamental human rights issues that affect people across the globe.

As for this year, our focus on drug decriminalization offers us an opportunity to engage in the conflicting interplay between public health and criminal justice reform with human dignity. Its risks need to be balanced sensitively with the benefits of the reform through reflection, evidence-based policies, and effective international cooperation.

I encourage each of you to bring fresh ideas, critical analysis, and a spirit of collaboration as we examine the global consequences of drug policies.
